Whilst the splitstaff has skills that also do heavy KI damage (notably Shin Crusher), it is less reliable against human enemies since it is countered when the enemy is guarding.

Katana is the most balanced, has decent range and solid damage. Duals are fast and short ranged, but don't hit hard. Odachi is slower, has the most range, and hits hardest.You unlock them when you reach later Plus cycles. At the end of NG+2, my weapons were capped at 35. The cap of 50 most likely only applies in the last NG+ cycle. Beyond that, you can get additional skill points by redoing the Dojo missions when you unlock them in NG+.
